A police officer in the Northern Territory, identified as Constable James Kirstenfeldt, is facing charges after an incident that took place in Darwin’s Muirhead suburb. The officer, who was not on duty at the time, has been accused of several offenses including driving under the influence of alcohol, careless driving, failure to provide a breath test, going armed in public, and failure to meet storage requirements.
Constable Kirstenfeldt, previously involved in the Yuendumu deployment in 2019, has not faced any criminal accusations related to that past incident. However, following the recent events, he has been suspended from duty with pay and is set to appear in Darwin Local Court on May 16 after being released on police bail.
The Northern Territory Police have taken the matter seriously, emphasizing their ability to investigate and hold their members accountable for any wrongdoing.
